Ving Tsun (Wing Chun; Chinese: Yong Chun Quan) is a centuries old martial art system with origins in the Shaolin Temple which is based on scientific principles of body mechanics and balance, economy of motion, and center-line theory. Ving Tsun does not require great strength or speed but focuses on developing of skill and co-ordination.
Ving Tsun is characterized by its linear motions and allowing a practitioner to deflect and redirect any force that is directed to them while countering. This helps keep the art of Ving Tsun a pure and integrated self-defense system, while removing restriction of technique as long as the Ving Tsun practitioner is consistent with the Ving Tsun principles and concepts. Proper deflection and redirection is obtained through proper positioning, good footwork, co-ordination of hands and feet and proper timing. Ving Tsun has always focused on being a practical form of self-defense.
As such, Ving Tsun has avoided being a point-scored sport or demonstration art. Because of Ving Tsun 's practicality, the more effective Ving Tsun strikes are too dangerous for freestyle competitions and as a result true Ving Tsun tournaments are rare or unknown. It is the art of choice for special tactics teams throughout the world.
