Situated in Xibei Lu, in Urumqi City, the Xinjiang Regional Museum is a large integrated museum and centre for the collection and study of cultural relics in Xinjiang.
The museum, which was built in 1953, has an exhibition hall that covers an area of about 7,800 square meters. The building is in an Uigur style, the internal decor having strong ethnic features.
In total there are over 50,000 items in the collection. These not only represent the ethnic lifestyle and humanity of the region but also illustrate its revolutionary spirit. With such an abundance of items on display, the exhibition is widely acknowledged for its comprehensive and informative nature both at home and abroad.
There are usually three kinds of exhibitions in the museum. The first is about the customs of ethnic groups in Xinjiang. All the arts, tools, costumes, household objects and religions of the ethnic groups in Xinjiang are exhibited here. The second concerns historical and cultural relics from Xinjiang. Over 50,000 cultural relics that have been excavated in Xinjiang are now on display in the exhibition hall. Ancient pottery, porcelain, terracotta figures, silk and even scriptures are on the list. The third exhibition is the most striking. More than 10 mummies found in the vast desert can be viewed well preserved here. One of them, named 'Sleeping Beauty' is perhaps the most amazing. Buried underground for about 3,800 years, it still retains a vivid image!
A visit to Xinjiang museum need not be dictated by the seasons. You can come here whenever to see the amazing human remains and all the other precious relics, and so learn more about the brilliant civilization that flourished in Xinjiang.
