The Simatai section of the Great Wall, not far from the Gubeikou section, is located at Gubeikou Town in the northeast of Miyun County, Beijing, 120 kilometers from the city center. Originally built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577) and rebuild in the early Hongwu years (1368-1398) of the Ming Dynasty. The Simatai Great Wall is 5.4 km long with all together 35 watchtowers. As the east section of the Gubeikou defense line, this magnificent section features great strategic significance. Though built for hundreds of years ago, the Simatai Great Wall still preserves all its original appearance. It not only incorporates a variety of styles of other parts of the 10, 000-li-long wall(10000 li = 5760 km (3580 miles), but also suggests some unique characteristics. Simatai Great Wall is the most perilous, dense, diverse, ingenuous, and peculiar of all the sections of the Great Wall.
Built in the valley, the Simatai Great Wall is divided into two parts by the Simatai Reservoir, over which a chain bridge runs through from east to west. Like two huge golden dragons, the two parts of the Great Wall wind down from the east and west mountains into the reservoir, carving a wonderful silhouette of the magnificent Great Wall in the clear blue water.
There are two springs called the 'Mandarin Duck Springs' at the foot of SiMaTai Great Wall. The east one is cold, while the west is warm. The two springs join into one lake so half the lake is cold and the other half is warm. In winter, hot steam rises from the lake, forming a marvelous spectacle.
In the east part, there are some interesting scenes include Watching Beijing Tower which is the summit of the Simatai Great Wall with an elevation of 986 m, it is the highest cultural relic in Beijing. People can see the sparking distant lights from the downtown Beijing. The Fairy Tower is the most beautiful of all the watchtowers, with a sculpture of twin lotus flowers above the arched doorway. There is a story tells that it was the dwelling place for an antelope who had been reincarnated in the form of an angel who fell in love with a shepherd. Also Heavenly Ladder and Sky Bridge.
